How to eliminate nuclear weapons

Nuclear weapons are dangerous and overvalued. Expose that reality — that they have only marginal military utility — and banning them goes from difficult to eminently doable.

Our goal is a statement by the U.S. president that nuclear weapons are obsolete and a pledge to aggressively champion that view with all other nuclear-armed states. Once a consensus exists that nuclear weapons are dangerous and virtually useless, a verifiable treaty that bans them worldwide will quickly follow.

Our approach is ratified by 12,000 years of tool making history, which shows that technological evolution is driven by utility. Useful tools are adopted and used; tools (including weapons) that are dangerous and not useful get abandoned.

Once there is consensus that nuclear weapons are virtually useless and very dangerous, a verifiable treaty to eliminate them will be easier than we ever dared to imagine.
